Hughes, the impressive Grade 1 victor with a perfect record, is slated to compete over a longer distance for the first time this Saturday in the Grade 1, $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes. This race, held at Santa Anita, covers 1 1/16 miles and is a crucial stepping stone for two-year-old thoroughbreds, offering a guaranteed entry into the prestigious $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on October 30.
Trainer Bob Baffert's Strategy for Hughes' Continued Success
Under the tutelage of renowned trainer Bob Baffert, Hughes maintained his flawless record last month, securing a dominant 4 3/4-length victory in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) over seven furlongs. Prior to that, the Into Mischief colt triumphed in the Best Pal (G2), a six-furlong event at Del Mar. Jockey Juan Hernandez, who has been aboard Hughes for both Grade 1 victories, will once again guide the promising colt.

Hughes, a $675,000 acquisition at the 2025 Keeneland September yearling sale, is owned by a distinguished group including Front Row Club, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables. Also emerging from the Del Mar Futurity is Dang Son, a colt by Good Magic, who secured a third-place finish in his stakes debut. Purchased for $250,000 as a yearling, Dang Son is trained by Doug O’Neill for Calumet Farm. Before his stakes outing, he broke his maiden over one mile on turf at Del Mar on August 15. Emisael Jaramillo has been confirmed as his jockey for the upcoming race.

Bob Baffert will also be fielding three other strong contenders in the American Pharoah Stakes: Imperial Honor, Domus, and Emancipate, each representing different owners. Imperial Honor showcased exceptional talent in his maiden race at Del Mar on September 7, winning by 5 1/4 lengths over 5 1/2 furlongs. This Honor A.P. colt, a $725,000 purchase at the OBS April sale, will be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Joel Rosario.
Domus and Emancipate: Rising Stars from the Baffert Barn
Domus, an Uncle Mo colt, broke his maiden at Del Mar in July before placing fourth in the Del Mar Futurity. He races for breeder Baoma Corp., with Kazushi Kimura making his debut as Domus’s jockey. Emancipate, a homebred for Cicero Farm, secured his maiden win in his second start, a six-furlong race at Del Mar on August 29. Also by Uncle Mo, Emancipate will have Hall of Famer Mike Smith in the irons for the first time.
