In a commanding return to the racetrack, Bracket Buster secured a decisive 15-length triumph in the prestigious West Virginia Governor's Stakes. This victory marked a spectacular comeback after a nine-month absence, underscoring the horse's exceptional talent and readiness for top-tier competition.
The highly anticipated 28th running of the $200,000 West Virginia Governor's Stakes, held at Mountaineer Park, saw Bracket Buster, ridden by veteran jockey John Velazquez and conditioned by trainer Victoria Oliver, as the favored contender. The race, contested over 1 1/16 miles, was open to three-year-olds and older, drawing a competitive field. Bracket Buster had last raced in October at Keeneland, where he finished as the runner-up in the Travers, demonstrating his prior form and class.
From the start, Neoequos, under Micah Husbands, broke sharply from the rail, setting a swift pace, clocking a quarter-mile in 23.77 seconds and a half-mile in 47.31 seconds. Bracket Buster, positioned strategically on the outside, kept close tabs on the leader, with Mogul trailing in third. As the race progressed to the far turn, Bracket Buster unleashed a powerful move, taking command near the five-sixteenths pole. By the three-quarters mark, he had established a 1 1/2-length lead, completing the segment in 1:11.36.
Velazquez then allowed Bracket Buster to extend his lead, and the colt responded with an explosive burst of speed, widening the gap to seven lengths through a mile in 1:37.33. He crossed the finish line in a remarkable 1:44.05 on a fast main track, under clear skies and 84-degree temperatures, paying out $6 for a win, $3.80 for a place, and $2.60 for a show. Warp Nine, under Frankie Pennington, rallied wide in the stretch to secure second place by a neck, 15 lengths behind the winner, returning $7.20 and $3.80. Neoequos faded slightly but managed to hold onto third, 15 1/4 lengths back, paying $2.40 to show. Itsmybirthday finished fourth, followed by Hall of Fame, Play It Loud, and Chiron. Notably, Mogul was pulled up on the far turn by jockey Diego Herrera but walked off under his own power, while Capo Luca was scratched before the race.
Bracket Buster, a bay colt born on May 22, 2022, in Kentucky, is sired by Vekoma and out of the Dance With Ravens mare Spring Dance.
