Breeders' Cup 2026: Field Updates and Withdrawals
Ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 Breeders' Cup, a series of withdrawals and subsequent field adjustments have significantly altered the landscape of the fourteen scheduled races. These changes, occurring swiftly after the initial pre-entries were made public, have introduced new contenders and reshaped expectations for the championships at Keeneland. The most notable defection includes Phileas Fogg, a strong contender for the Classic, whose absence due to a foot injury has reduced that field to ten participants. Other prominent horses such as Ten Bob Tony, Drazinda, and Nabati have also been pulled from their respective events, alongside numerous other participants across various Juvenile and Mile races.
Reports from credible sources within the racing community confirmed the initial wave of withdrawals. Phileas Fogg's exit from the Breeders' Cup Classic, as reported by David Grening of Daily Racing Form, marks a significant shift in one of the most prestigious races. This particular race, scheduled for October 31st, will now proceed with a smaller, albeit still competitive, roster of ten horses. The impact of these early defections extends across multiple categories, signaling a dynamic and evolving competitive environment as the event draws nearer.
Further announcements from the Breeders' Cup organizers detailed additional changes, confirming the removal of three more horses beyond an initial withdrawal. Among these, Ten Bob Tony was removed from the Mile, while Drazinda and Nabati were withdrawn from the Juvenile Turf Sprint, illustrating a broader trend of adjustments impacting diverse race categories. These decisions necessitate the promotion of alternative horses, ensuring that each race maintains a robust and exciting field despite the unexpected changes.
The adjustments continued with reports indicating further withdrawals from various races. Lambourn and Minnie Hauk are out of the Turf, Gstaad and Constitution River from the Mile, Net Par from the Juvenile, So Lovely from the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Al Hudaiba from the Juvenile Turf. These extensive changes underscore the unpredictable nature of elite horse racing, where the health and readiness of equine athletes can quickly alter the competitive lineup. Consequently, other eligible horses, such as Japan's Ask Ikigomi and Aidan O'Brien's Puerto Rico for the Mile, and Johanna Walsh for the Turf, have been identified as next in line to fill the vacancies.
The withdrawal of Net Par from the Juvenile race has narrowed its field to eight, with Bob Baffert’s undefeated Hughes now a prominent figure. For the Juvenile Turf, Todd Pletcher’s Liam’s Law is now poised to join the lineup, indicating that top trainers are actively managing their entries to optimize their horses’ chances. Additionally, trainer Mark Casse opted to redirect Voyager from the Juvenile Fillies Turf to the Juvenile Fillies, and combined with So Lovely's defection, this decision has allowed Go For Launch and Scommessa Sicura to enter the Juvenile Fillies Turf. In the Juvenile Turf Sprint, the departure of Nabati, following Drazinda's earlier non-selection, has opened a spot for Crownbreaker. As of now, no further alterations have been announced for the remaining Breeders' Cup races, maintaining anticipation for the unaltered events.
