The opening day features eight races, attracting 76 entries with an average of 9.5 horses per race. The highlight of the day is the seventh race, a $134,000 optional-claiming allowance event over one mile, where Hypnus, a 4-year-old colt by Into Mischief, makes his return to U.S. racing after a fifth-place finish in the Godolphin Mile (G2). He will face off against First Resort, the 2024 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner, who is looking to regain peak form. Other notable races on the card include a $127,000 first-level allowance for 2-year-old fillies and two $120,000 maiden special weight races for 2-year-olds.

The Iroquois (G3) serves as the starting point for the Road to the Kentucky Derby 2027 series, while the Pocahontas (G3) begins the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, both offering tiered bonuses for top finishers towards Breeders’ Cup fees. The most anticipated event is the Locust Grove (G2), which is expected to feature a thrilling contest between two national champion fillies, Nitrogen and Splendora. Nitrogen, a 4-year-old filly trained by Mark Casse, achieved a second-place finish in the Whitney (G1) and a dominant win in the Ogden Phipps (G1). Splendora, a 5-year-old mare under the guidance of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, has had an impressive year with four wins from five starts, including three Group 1 and 2 victories. Other significant races on Saturday include the listed Louisville Thoroughbred Society and the listed Open Mind for female sprinters. The meet will also feature a nighttime stakes tripleheader on Saturday, September 19, and will conclude with the $500,000 Lukas Classic (G2) on Saturday, September 26, a key prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and the Ack Ack (G3) and Bourbon Flight.
