The first race will now commence at 11:30 a.m. EDT, one hour earlier than originally planned. The final race of the day is anticipated to conclude around 3:00 p.m. EDT, significantly ahead of the initial 4:34 p.m. EDT finish time.
According to the National Weather Service, the region is bracing for temperatures nearing 97 degrees Fahrenheit, with a heat index potentially soaring to 107 degrees. While a possibility of showers exists after 4 p.m., the revised schedule aims to complete all races before the most intense heat of the afternoon sets in. Spectators and participants are advised to prepare for the elevated temperatures.
The day's main event, the Maggie L. Walker Stakes, is a dirt mile race designed for fillies aged three and older. Among the anticipated frontrunners is Amalfi Drive, a 5-2 morning line favorite trained by Mike Stidham, who recently secured a second-place finish in the Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park on June 13. Challenging her will be Reputation, a George Weaver-trained horse making her first appearance since a third-place finish in the Princess Rooney (G3) last September at Gulfstream, and Irish Maxima, who achieved an upset victory in the Ruffian (G2) at Aqueduct on May 9.
The racing program for Sunday is currently slated to proceed as initially scheduled, with the first post at 12:30 p.m. EDT. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit for Sunday, accompanied by a 70% chance of rain.
