Counting Stars Aims for Alabama Stakes After Dominant Victory
Emerging victorious from the Coaching Club American Oaks, Counting Stars has set her sights on the prestigious Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama Stakes scheduled for August 22nd at Saratoga. Her recent performance saw her decisively defeat Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Always a Runner by 4 1/4 lengths, securing her second Grade 1 win of the season and her second triumph over her primary competitor in three races. Despite initial discussions about her potentially competing against male horses in the Travers (G1), trainer Mark Casse has confirmed that the Alabama Stakes remains the current objective for the acclaimed filly.
Reflecting on her exceptional talent, trainer Mark Casse expressed profound satisfaction with Counting Stars' readiness and performance. He noted that the daughter of Honor A.P. recovered remarkably well from her recent race, appearing as energetic as if she were ready to run again immediately. Her dominance in the Coaching Club American Oaks was highlighted by a strategic pacesetting trip under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who guided her to the front early in the 1 1/8-mile race. Despite a challenge from Always a Runner in the stretch, Counting Stars surged ahead, ultimately pulling away to finish in a rapid time of 1:48.98, significantly faster than other races on the same card.
Counting Stars' impressive record includes her victory in the Acorn over Always a Runner in June and the Fantasy (G2) in March. With this latest win, she continues to build a strong case for being a leading contender for this year's champion 3-year-old filly award, a title previously held by another horse from Casse’s stable, Nitrogen, who won the Alabama last year. Casse also mentioned that another of his fillies, Measure, who secured third place in the Coaching Club American Oaks in her stakes debut, also emerged from the race in good condition and could potentially join Counting Stars in the Alabama.
The journey of Counting Stars showcases not only exceptional athletic prowess but also the dedication and strategic acumen of her team. Her consistent victories and ability to overcome strong competition serve as an inspiring example of determination and excellence in the world of horse racing, pushing boundaries and setting new standards for achievement.
