Doubting Thomas Secures Victory in Bricks and Mortar Stakes
Doubting Thomas emerged victorious in the $175,000 Bricks and Mortar Stakes at Belmont Park, delivering a powerful performance after a strategic change in race distance. Jockey Jorge Ruiz guided the colt to a commanding win, navigating from a wide position into the stretch to seize the lead and hold off competitors, ultimately securing a length victory over Iron Palace. This success followed a sixth-place finish in the Gio Ponti Stakes, underscoring the team's adaptability and the horse's strong response to the seven-furlong turf sprint.
The race saw Intricate Spirit setting a brisk pace, with Doubting Thomas making steady progress from midfield. As the final stages approached, Ruiz skillfully maneuvered Doubting Thomas into an advantageous position, launching a decisive rally that propelled them to the front. Despite a late challenge from Iron Palace, Doubting Thomas maintained his lead, clocking an impressive time on the firm course. Trainer Mike Trombetta attributed the win to the adjustment in distance, noting that the shorter race perfectly suited the colt's capabilities, a sentiment echoed by Ruiz, who praised the horse's talent and potential.
Looking ahead, Trombetta is considering the six-furlong Carle Place Stakes as the next target for Doubting Thomas, aiming to capitalize on the horse's confirmed preference for shorter distances. The race also featured notable performances from Iron Palace, who rallied impressively from the back to secure second place, and Big Destroyer, who finished third. The event highlighted the competitive nature of horse racing, where strategic decisions and a horse's adaptability play crucial roles in achieving success, promising an exciting future for Doubting Thomas and his connections.
