The summer horse racing circuit draws to a close this year with a flurry of activity on both coasts, as Saratoga and Del Mar conclude their seasons on Labor Day. This convergence means that a wealth of significant races, held back until the end of the season, will unfold within a condensed 72-hour period. Adding to the excitement, Kentucky Downs, a track with a limited annual racing schedule, has slated three of its race days for this decisive week, becoming a focal point for enthusiasts.
Kentucky Downs, located in Franklin, Kentucky, leads the pack with eight stakes races scheduled, more than any other track. Among these, the Kentucky Downs Turf Cup (G2) and the Turf Sprint (G2) are particularly noteworthy, offering direct qualification to the prestigious Breeders' Cup. The Nashville Derby (G2) stands as the marquee event of the meet. Elsewhere, Sunday marks a critical moment for identifying potential contenders for the 2027 Kentucky Derby, with the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and the Hopeful (G1) presenting seven-furlong challenges for two-year-olds. These races, taking place concurrently on opposite sides of the country, provide an early glimpse into the future stars of horse racing. Hughes, an undefeated colt trained by Bob Baffert, is set to compete in the Futurity, while Booked, who suffered only one defeat this year, races in the Hopeful without his previous conqueror, Twinkle Town. While many of these young horses may not ultimately reach Churchill Downs in May, these events are where future champions begin to emerge.
