European Contenders Arrive at Keeneland for Breeders' Cup Showdown

A select group of European racehorses has commenced their training at Keeneland, marking their initial steps on the track after successfully navigating their transatlantic journey for the prestigious Breeders' Cup. These early sessions are crucial for the horses to acclimate to their new surroundings and fine-tune their preparations for the demanding races ahead.

European Thoroughbreds Gear Up for Breeders' Cup at Keeneland

On Tuesday morning, October 27, 2026, the renowned defending Breeders' Cup Mile champion, Notable Speech, quickly re-familiarized himself with the Keeneland track. This marked his first appearance since concluding quarantine the previous night. The horse, under the care of trainer Charlie Appleby, was among the inaugural European contenders to exercise on the main track shortly after 7 a.m. EDT. He was accompanied by stablemate El Cordobes, who is slated to compete in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf. Exercise rider Colm O’Donaghue praised Notable Speech's condition, highlighting his professionalism and independence during the solo workout, remarking, “He’s in great shape. He’s danced every dance, and he’s a professional. He went out there solo this morning, didn’t need a lead or anything. It was like his own backyard.” Both Appleby-trained horses are reported to have traveled exceptionally well, maintaining excellent health in anticipation of their weekend races. Trainer Appleby himself is expected to arrive in Kentucky later on Tuesday, with plans to be trackside by Wednesday morning.

The morning saw a bustling yet smooth routine for the European runners. Following their journey across the Atlantic, their initial exercise routines were limited to gentle trotting and cantering. Among the first to grace the training track was Miss Yechance, who emerged just after 7 a.m. with her regular jockey, Jack Nicholls. This filly, trained by Karl Burke and fresh off a victory in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (G1), is meticulously preparing for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. Assistant trainer James Cowley confirmed that Miss Yechance handled the trip from England admirably and has maintained peak condition. Cowley stated, “She looks great in herself, and we're really happy with her weight leading into the week. We won't do a lot with her now. She's where we want her fitness-wise, and it's just a case of keeping everything moving and ticking over.” Miss Yechance is scheduled for a brief turf workout on Wednesday, focusing on navigating turns and accelerating through the stretch, with light exercise planned for Thursday and Friday to ensure her freshness for Saturday's race. Despite drawing post 14, Cowley views this outside position as potentially advantageous, hoping the inner pace will allow his filly to establish her own pace from the outside. He also expressed strong confidence in Nicholls, who boasts an undefeated record in three starts with the filly across various race categories.

The influential O'Brien family also made their presence known at Keeneland on Tuesday morning, with Aidan, Joseph, and Donnacha O'Brien all present to oversee their respective entries. Joseph O'Brien led his string onto the main track, with Folsom Blues among the horses under his guidance. Jockey Dylan Browne-McMonagle, aboard Johanna Walsh (entered in the Turf), reported the filly to be in excellent form. Puerto Rico, a contender in the Mile, spearheaded Aidan O'Brien's group, which also included Sun Goddess, anticipated to be one of the shortest-priced favorites in Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf. Rachel Richardson, who often rides Aidan O'Brien's top horses during their U.S. travels, was aboard Sun Goddess, noting the filly's superb condition as she continued her preparations for Friday. Adding to the European contingent, Hell Of A Spin is set to make trainer Adrian Keatley’s Breeders' Cup debut in Friday's Juvenile Turf Sprint. The colt, who finished third in the Middle Park Stakes (G1) at Newmarket on September 26, will start from post 11 with jockey Mikey Sheehy. Keatley conveyed his honor and the significant opportunity this presents for his relatively small yard in Northern England, stating, “It's a great honor to have a runner in the Breeders' Cup and a massive opportunity. We are a relatively small yard based in the North of England, so for the horse and ourselves we're punching way above our weight, but we think he has a massive chance.” Keatley also lauded Sheehy's talent and connection to Keeneland through his brother. Hell Of A Spin is described as a straightforward and competitive colt with a strong work ethic. He is also scheduled to be offered at Wednesday's Keeneland Championship Sale, presenting an opportunity for buyers to acquire a promising Breeders' Cup contender. Keatley believes the colt possesses the pedigree and temperament to excel over longer distances in the next season, asserting, “He is a genuine Group 1 horse. The team is very much looking forward to the race. We're very hopeful of a huge run.”

French champion trainer Francis-Henri Graffard has brought three horses to Kentucky for the championships: Amusingly in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Primetime Emmy in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, and Map Of Stars in the Turf. All three have reportedly traveled well and settled into their new environment. Map Of Stars is currently on the also-eligible list for the Turf and requires a scratch from the main field to secure a starting position.

The meticulous preparation and optimistic outlook from the European camps underscore the global appeal and fierce competition of the Breeders' Cup. The presence of seasoned champions alongside promising newcomers highlights the event's role in showcasing top-tier equine talent from across the globe. It is a testament to the dedication of trainers and jockeys alike, all striving for victory on this international stage, further solidifying the Breeders' Cup as a pinnacle event in horse racing.
