Grade 1 Champion Antiquarian Relocates to Arrow Stud in Japan
Antiquarian, a celebrated Grade 1 victor, is set to begin a new chapter as a stallion at Arrow Stud in Japan, following his acquisition by JS Company and Directors. This move comes after a distinguished racing career with Centennial Farms, highlighted by his triumph in the 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup. His retirement from racing was prompted by a suspensory injury, which prevented his participation in major upcoming events like the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Centennial Farms formally announced the sale of Antiquarian on a Friday morning via their social media platform. Simultaneously, Arrow Stud confirmed the horse's impending arrival in a news release on their official website. The decision to retire Antiquarian was made on August 27, in response to a suspensory injury that would have sidelined him from prominent races, thus paving the way for his transition to stud duties.
Antiquarian's journey began when Centennial Farms secured him as a yearling for $250,000 at the Keeneland September sale in 2022. The now 5-year-old horse is a progeny of Preservationist, who also competed under the same ownership. His lineage traces back to the winning Istan mare, Lifetime Memory, making him a half-sibling to Fondly, who clinched victory in the 2025 Delaware Oaks (G3).
Under the expert guidance of trainer Todd Pletcher, Antiquarian compiled an impressive racing record of 5 wins, 3 second-place finishes, and 1 third-place finish from 14 starts, accumulating career earnings of $1.3 million. His notable achievements include three graded-stakes victories: the Peter Pan (G3) in 2024, the Jockey Club Gold Cup last year, and the Westchester (G3) earlier this year. His final competitive outing saw him secure a third-place position behind Sovereignty and Nitrogen in the Whitney (G1) on August 8.
At Arrow Stud, Antiquarian will join a prestigious roster of stallions. This includes renowned names such as California Chrome, a two-time Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016; Shanghai Bobby, the winner of the 2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile; Sinister Minister, who captured the 2006 Blue Grass Stakes (G1); Firenze Fire, a multiple Grade 2 winner; and several Japan Group 1 champions like Cafe Pharoah, Mozu Ascot, and T O Keynes. This new environment promises a vibrant breeding career for the accomplished racehorse.
