Gulfstream Park is on the cusp of inaugurating its autumn racing season this Friday, presenting a nine-race agenda. The highlight of this highly anticipated meet is a series of fourteen stakes races, collectively offering an impressive purse of $1.925 million. This sum notably includes an additional $250,000 contributed by the Florida-Bred Incentive Fund, underscoring the significance of the upcoming events. These races are meticulously planned to precede the esteemed 2026-27 championship meet, which is scheduled to commence on Thanksgiving Day, November 26.
Among the distinguished events, the Grade 3, $225,000 Princess Rooney Stakes stands out, celebrating its 40th anniversary. This race, spanning seven furlongs, is exclusively for fillies and mares aged three and older, and crucially, it serves as a 'win-and-you're-in' qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Additionally, the same day will feature the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, a five-furlong dash for horses three years and up, and the $100,000 Ginger Punch, contested over a mile on grass for fillies and mares of similar age. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who aims for an unprecedented 17th consecutive Gulfstream meet title, has nominated six horses to the Princess Rooney, including past winner Haulin Ice, further intensifying the competitive spirit of the upcoming races. Historically, the Princess Rooney has been a critical precursor for the Breeders’ Cup, with many winners and top finishers progressing to compete at the national level.
The autumn schedule will also shine a spotlight on Florida-bred horses with two $150,000 events: the FHBPA Three Ring for two-year-old fillies and the FHBPA Express Tour for two-year-olds, both contested over seven furlongs on the main track. The meet will further feature the $100,000 Hollywood Beach, a five-furlong open turf sprint for two-year-olds, and additional $250,000 races for Florida-bred juveniles in October. As the season progresses towards the Breeders’ Cup weekend at Gulfstream, a quartet of turf stakes will be held, enhancing the variety and excitement of the racing calendar.
