Jamie Spencer Relocates to California Racing Circuit

Prominent jockey Jamie Spencer, recently triumphant in the Canadian International (G1) aboard Arabian Crown on October 3 at Woodbine, will transition his main operations to Southern California, commencing this Saturday at Santa Anita, as reported by the Daily Racing Form.

The 46-year-old Irish native, who secured jockey titles in Ireland in 2004 and Britain in 2005 and 2007, has not previously maintained a regular presence in the United States. Spencer expressed his enthusiasm to the DRF, stating, "Why not come here and see how it goes? I’ve been working in the mornings here and hopefully I’ll be busy at Santa Anita and Del Mar." His initial engagements include riding Ellen Jorth in Saturday’s fifth race, followed by Santa Barbarian in the tenth. On Sunday, he will partner Brawler in the seventh race, and on Monday, he is scheduled to ride Tirupati in the Swingtime Stakes, a turf event for fillies and mares.

Following his California commitments, Spencer will journey to Melbourne, Australia, on Monday, October 17, for a Group 1 race aboard Royal Supremacy in the 1 1/2-mile Caulfield Cup. This international trip will mean his absence from Santa Anita during the October 16-18 racing weekend. Santa Anita’s season concludes on November 1, with Del Mar’s fall meeting commencing on November 6. Of Spencer’s 19 North American victories, ten have been in Grade 1 races, though none have occurred in California, a statistic he hopes to change. His most notable prior performances in California include a third-place finish with Silver Knott in the 2023 Hollywood Derby (G1) at Del Mar and a second with Space Traveller in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1) at Santa Anita in March 2022. He also had a near miss in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic, where Toast of New York was narrowly defeated by Bayern. That same weekend, Trade Storm and Just the Judge secured third-place finishes in the Mile and Filly & Mare Turf, respectively. Spencer has participated in 12 Breeders’ Cup races held at Santa Anita.

Spencer’s recent momentum in the U.S. includes wins at Kentucky Downs this fall, where Haatem claimed the $1.36 million Mint Millions Invitational (G3) and Take Charge Star won the $1.04 million Franklin-Simpson Stakes (G2) on September 7. His distinguished career is largely built on his achievements in Britain, where he boasts over 2,000 victories, with 18 this year alone. In 2007, his 190 wins earned him a share of the season’s title with Seb Sanders. He has 29 Royal Ascot victories and was the leading rider at the meeting in 2006. His impressive Group 1 record includes triumphs with Fame and Glory in the 2011 Ascot Gold Cup, Khaadem in the 2023 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, and Sariska in the 2009 English Oaks.

Jamie Spencer's decision to relocate signifies a bold new chapter in his illustrious career. His dedication to mastering new racing environments and his consistent pursuit of excellence serve as an inspiration. It underscores the spirit of ambition and adaptability essential for sustained success in any competitive field, reminding us that growth often lies beyond our familiar horizons.
