Jockey Antonio Fresu Suspended for Riding Infraction
Jockey Antonio Fresu received a three-day suspension from Del Mar officials following an incident in a recent race where his horse, Big Blast, was involved in interference during the final stretch. This penalty aligns with California Horse Racing Board regulations concerning careless riding.
The ruling stems from the eighth race on Friday's card, where Fresu's ride aboard Big Blast was deemed to have altered course without sufficient clearance, impeding other competitors. Despite the infraction, Big Blast maintained its victory in the one-mile turf maiden special weight for California-bred two-year-old fillies, holding off Miss Mo Brown by a neck. The suspension period for Fresu is scheduled for September 12, 13, and 18, though it will not restrict him from participating in designated races.
Fresu, 34, has established a significant presence in California racing since his move in 2023, achieving notable successes including winning the Santa Anita Derby in 2024 and securing riding titles at Santa Anita. He consistently performed well at Del Mar, finishing second in the summer standings for three consecutive years and currently ranking third in the ongoing meet. Following the conclusion of the Del Mar summer season on September 7, Fresu intends to transition his riding operations to Belmont Park.
