Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Hospitalized Following Keeneland Racing Incident
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., a five-time Eclipse Award laureate, was recently admitted to a hospital following an incident at Keeneland racetrack. This event marks a challenging period for the rider, who had only weeks earlier made a comeback from another injury. The racing community awaits further updates on his condition, highlighting the inherent risks in the sport of horse racing.
Jockey's On-Track Incident and Immediate Aftermath
During the ninth and final race at Keeneland, celebrated jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. experienced a significant fall that led to his immediate hospitalization. The incident occurred when his horse, She's Good Trouble, stumbled shortly after departing the starting gate, dislodging Ortiz. Emergency medical personnel promptly attended to him, carefully transporting him off the track for medical assessment, with initial reports indicating a possible injury to his lower extremities.
On Thursday at Keeneland, Irad Ortiz Jr. was involved in a racing mishap that necessitated his transfer to a local medical facility for evaluation. His mount, She’s Good Trouble, a 3-1 second favorite in the $85,000 maiden special weight for two-year-old fillies, faltered just a stride out of the gate, resulting in Ortiz being unseated. Following the fall, emergency medical technicians provided immediate care on the track before moving him to an ambulance. He was subsequently observed being wheeled out of the first aid station on a stretcher, though Keeneland officials confirmed he remained alert. Attempts to contact Ortiz’s agent, Steve Rushing, for an update on his condition were ongoing at the time of reporting.
Ortiz's Recent Return and Continued Challenges
This recent accident comes merely three weeks after Ortiz had resumed racing, having recovered from a foot injury that sidelined him for 55 days. His previous injury, involving seven small fractures in his left foot, occurred in August at Saratoga when his horse, And the Runner Is, pinned his foot against the rail. Despite avoiding surgery for the earlier injury, this new incident raises concerns about his sustained health and competitive future, especially as he had been performing strongly since his return.
The recent spill is particularly unfortunate given that Ortiz had only just returned to competitive racing after a 55-day absence due to a foot injury. On August 8th at Saratoga, his previous mount, And the Runner Is, had bolted during the pre-race parade, trapping his left foot against the outside rail and causing seven minor fractures. Remarkably, Ortiz recovered without needing surgery and made his comeback on October 2nd, the opening day of the Keeneland fall meet, by winning the Phoenix Stakes (G2) aboard Nakatomi. Since his return, he had continued to demonstrate his skill, securing the Franklin Stakes (G2) on October 11th with Time to Dazzle and entering Thursday's races just one win behind competitor Tyler Gaffalione in the fall meet standings, with the Breeders’ Cup scheduled to be hosted by Keeneland on October 30-31.
