Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Returns to Saratoga After Suspension

Following a six-day suspension, renowned jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has made his eagerly anticipated comeback to the racing circuit. This period of absence meant he was unable to participate in the initial six days of the Saratoga meeting, a track where he has consistently dominated as the top rider for the previous four years and seven times overall. His return signifies a renewed push to reclaim his prominent position in the sport.

Ortiz expressed his frustration during his time away from the track, stating that watching the races felt like an eternity. He emphasized his deep passion for his profession, indicating how challenging it was to be sidelined. During his suspension, he briefly visited Puerto Rico before returning to work with numerous horses, acknowledging the many individuals who rely on his expertise and dedication.

His return to competitive racing on Saturday proved to be an eventful one. Ortiz secured a significant win in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby aboard Leading Change, a horse that remains undefeated in two starts under trainer Brad Cox. Reflecting on his rigorous schedule, Ortiz mentioned working horses in the morning, then flying to Indiana for the race, and returning late the same night.

On Sunday, his first day back at Saratoga, Ortiz commenced with a third-place finish in the opening race. He then clinched his first victory of the meet in the second race, a 1 1/2-mile turf event, riding the 6-year-old mare Malibu Smart to a surprising 13-1 win. Despite this triumph, it was his sole victory out of six starts that day, though he also managed a second and a third-place finish. Currently, his brother Jose holds the leading rider position with 15 wins, closely followed by Flavien Prat with 14.

When questioned about his chances of securing the Saratoga title this year, Ortiz remained focused on his personal performance. He conveyed his intention to concentrate on his riding and do his best, acknowledging that winning the title would be a great achievement, but he would continue to try regardless. His dedication to his craft remains unwavering as he works to make up for lost time and compete at the highest level.
