The initial ruling from the New York State Gaming Commission had imposed a 30-day ban, but an appeal by Lopez led to a reduction and a deferred serving period. The incident involved his mount, I Love Giraffes, appearing to clip heels and fall, leading to a pile-up that injured other horses and a jockey.
The controversy originated during a one-mile turf race where Lopez was aboard I Love Giraffes. On the far turn, the 3-year-old filly encountered an issue, seemingly making contact with another horse, which resulted in her falling. This unfortunate event triggered a domino effect, causing three additional horses to also go down. Tragically, I Love Giraffes sustained a broken hip, while jockey Javier Castellano, who was riding one of the affected horses, suffered a minor back injury that sidelined him for three days. The New York State Gaming Commission’s initial assessment deemed Lopez's actions as "gross careless riding," leading to the proposed 30-day suspension.
