Joining these seasoned competitors are two fresh contenders, all vying for victory and the coveted, fees-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on October 31.
King of Gosford, a 5-year-old English-bred horse trained by Phil D’Amato, clinched the Del Mar Mile by a head under jockey Umberto Rispoli. This triumph marked his second consecutive stakes win, propelling his career earnings past the $1 million mark. Trainer D'Amato expressed confidence in his charge, noting King of Gosford's competitive spirit and recent momentum. Detain, a 4-year-old Irish-bred colt, finished a close second in the Del Mar Mile, followed by El Potente and Cabo Spirit. Detain's trainer, Michael McCarthy, is optimistic about the longer stretch at Santa Anita favoring his horse's stalking style. El Potente, despite a challenging outside post in the Del Mar Mile, delivered a strong performance, and his trainer, Dan Blacker, believes a better draw and his preference for Santa Anita will benefit him in the upcoming race.
