Luster Primed for Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup After King's Plate Triumph
Trainer Josie Carroll shared her enthusiasm for Luster's impending return to the track this Saturday for the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. After clinching the King's Plate in August, the filly was given a restorative break, and Carroll believes she's now in prime condition for the challenge. Luster's impressive season boasts four victories, including the Selene Stakes (G3) and Woodbine Oaks, underscoring her potential in the demanding turf race.
Luster Set for Keeneland Showdown After August Victory
In the vibrant equestrian world, the focus shifts to Keeneland as Luster, a formidable filly under the tutelage of trainer Josie Carroll, prepares for a high-stakes competition. Following her triumphant performance in the King's Plate on August 15, where she secured a 5 1/2-length win, Luster enjoyed a period of rest. This strategic break aimed to ensure she would be fresh and revitalized for the prestigious Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Carroll conveyed her confidence on a recent Monday morning, emphasizing that the filly's demanding race schedule warranted a proper recovery period before tackling such an significant event.
Luster’s 2026 campaign has been remarkable, featuring four victories, including notable triumphs in the Selene Stakes (G3) and the Woodbine Oaks, a race specifically for Canada-bred horses. Her lineage, sired by Knicks Go, further solidifies her pedigree as she faces a competitive field in Saturday's 1 1/8-mile turf race. Among her formidable rivals will be the top three finishers from the Del Mar Oaks (G1): Tam Tam, Lookin at Diamond, and Kensington Lane, promising an exhilarating contest.
The filly's preparation has been meticulous, with her return to the work tab at Woodbine’s synthetic track on September 7. Her most recent workout saw her breeze five furlongs in a swift 59.6 seconds, marking the second-fastest time among 22 horses at that distance. Jockey John Velazquez, who guided Luster to victory in both the King's Plate and Woodbine Oaks, will once again be in the saddle for this pivotal race.
Beyond Luster, Carroll’s stable has also seen success with Lupa, a 4-year-old filly who recently won the Ontario Matron (G3) on September 12 at Woodbine, overcoming the odds-on favorite Fantastical by 3 1/4 lengths. Lupa's consistent performance, including a third-place finish in the Canadian (G2) and a narrow second to Fantastical in the Trillium (G3), has delighted Carroll, who noted that Lupa has "found her stride" after a gradual development. The decision regarding Lupa’s next start remains open, with considerations for either continuing on grass or aiming for the mile-and-a-quarter Maple Leaf (G3) on November 7.
Another promising two-year-old filly, Lamirada, by Army Mule, is also targeting a stakes race this weekend. Despite a seventh-place finish in the Natalma (G1) on September 12 after winning her debut in August, Carroll remains optimistic. She attributed the Natalma result to Lamirada's inexperience, explaining that the filly became overly aggressive and struggled to settle, ultimately affecting her finish. Lamirada is now pointed toward the Glorious Song stakes, a seven-furlong race at Woodbine on Saturday.
In other stable news, Corsia Veloce, last year's Canada champion 2-year-old filly with a perfect 3-for-3 record including a Natalma win, has been retired. After one start this year, finishing third in the black-type Fury Stakes in June, her owners made the decision to breed her, concluding her racing career on a high note.
The strategic management of these equine athletes by Josie Carroll highlights a profound understanding of their needs, balancing rigorous training with essential recovery. Luster's upcoming performance at Keeneland will be a testament to this philosophy, as she aims to add another Grade 1 victory to her impressive resume, further solidifying her place among the elite in horse racing.
