Magnificat Triumphs in Tranquility Lake Stakes Despite Early Setback
In a display of sheer determination and athletic prowess, the four-year-old filly Magnificat secured an impressive win at the $100,000 Tranquility Lake Stakes held at Del Mar. Despite a challenging start where she stumbled badly out of the gate, Magnificat, guided by jockey Joel Rosario, demonstrated incredible resilience. She recovered from trailing the field to ultimately overpower her competitors, clinching victory by a decisive 2 1/2 lengths. This triumph marks a significant milestone for the filly, being her first win over a two-turn distance, and adds another feather to the cap of Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella and owner Spendthrift Farm.
Magnificat Overcomes Early Adversity to Claim Tranquility Lake Stakes at Del Mar
On a thrilling Saturday at the picturesque Del Mar Racetrack, Magnificat, a formidable four-year-old filly, orchestrated a sensational comeback to win the listed $100,000 Tranquility Lake Stakes. The race, contested over one mile on the main track, saw Magnificat, ridden by the skilled Joel Rosario and trained by the esteemed Richard Mandella for Spendthrift Farm, face immediate adversity. As the gates sprang open, Magnificat stumbled severely, leaving her at the very rear of the pack as they entered the first turn.
While Magnificat navigated her early troubles, So There She Was, with Emisael Jaramillo aboard, engaged in a fierce battle for the lead against outside rivals, eventually dueling with Amorita through rapid fractions of 22.51 seconds for the quarter-mile, 46.18 for the half-mile, and 1:11.47 for three-quarters of a mile. Mandella's other entry, Amorita, was making her first dirt start since her debut in 2024.
Rosario masterfully guided Magnificat along the rail, steadily advancing her position up the backstretch. By the three-quarter pole, she had moved into third place. Turning for home, Magnificat swung into the two-path, drawing alongside So There She Was with just a furlong remaining. With a powerful surge, she asserted her dominance in midstretch, pulling away to secure a 2 1/2-length victory. Her final time was an impressive 1:38.03 on a fast main track, with the seven-furlong mark clocked at 1:24.77. Magnificat rewarded her backers with payouts of $4.80 for a win, $3.00 for place, and $2.40 for show.
Our Moonlight, ridden by Tiago Pereira for trainer Dean Pederson, made a strong late run four wide around the far turn to claim second place, returning $6.00 for place and $3.80 for show. Rosie Jeeks, who initially led before dropping back, rallied under Kyle Frey to secure third for trainer Neil Drysdale, paying $11.20 to show. Amorita faded to fourth, eight lengths behind the winner. Howin, making her first start since September 2025, finished fifth, just a nose ahead of So There She Was, who ended up sixth. Surf Song took seventh, while Mi Confesion was eased after tiring on the far turn.
Magnificat, a Kentucky-bred four-year-old filly, is a homebred of Spendthrift Farm, sired by Omaha Beach out of the Ghostzapper mare Holy Helena. Catalina Cocktail and Lavender Love were scratched from the race.
Magnificat's performance in the Tranquility Lake Stakes serves as a powerful reminder that perseverance and strategic horsemanship can overcome even the most challenging beginnings. Her ability to recover from a significant stumble and dominate the field speaks volumes about her talent and the expert training she receives. This victory not only highlights her potential for future successes in longer-distance races but also reinforces the thrilling and unpredictable nature of horse racing, where every moment can turn the tide of a competition. It’s a testament to the fact that even when the odds seem stacked against them, true champions find a way to prevail.
