McCollum Optimistic About Hawks' Future Prospects
Veteran guard CJ McCollum is enthusiastic about the Atlanta Hawks' trajectory, believing the team is poised to advance further after concluding the previous season with significant momentum. His anticipation for the forthcoming season stems from the team's impressive performance late last year and the crucial playoff exposure the young squad acquired. McCollum is keen on utilizing a full training camp to deepen team cohesion and nurture the growth of the emerging talent, despite their earlier exit from the postseason.
McCollum's journey with the Hawks commenced in January following a trade from Washington. His integration into the team proved pivotal, contributing to their remarkable turnaround as they secured 20 victories in their final 26 games. During his 41 appearances for Atlanta, McCollum showcased his versatility, averaging 18.7 points and 4.1 assists, a performance instrumental in the team's late-season resurgence.
With a complete offseason ahead, a stark contrast to his mid-season arrival last year, McCollum is eager to cultivate stronger bonds with his teammates. He emphasized the importance of this period for enhancing collective understanding and allowing the younger players to further hone their skills. “I’m just excited to be able to have a full training camp,” he stated. “Like I was traded in the middle of the season, so I’m excited about that. Excited about the growth and the potential that a lot of the young guys have, and the experiences that we were able to have this last season competing for a playoff spot, making the playoffs, and then playing against a really good team.”
Atlanta's playoff campaign concluded in the initial round against the New York Knicks. Despite holding a 2-1 series lead, the Hawks ultimately lost four consecutive games to the Knicks, who then embarked on an impressive 13-game postseason winning streak culminating in an NBA championship. Although the outcome was not what they desired, McCollum views this playoff experience as an invaluable learning opportunity for the maturing Hawks.
“It teaches you how to be better and make moments,” McCollum reflected on the playoff experience. “It teaches you how to execute. Also teaches you how to prepare. So I’m really just excited about the opportunity to have some more growth moments together as a team.” This perspective underscores his belief that the challenges faced will serve as a foundation for future success, reinforcing the team's collective development.
The veteran guard's excitement is palpable as he envisions a future where the Hawks build upon their recent achievements. The upcoming season represents a fresh start, offering the team an opportunity to capitalize on their acquired experience and continue their development. McCollum's leadership and strategic insights will be crucial as Atlanta aims to translate their potential into sustained success on the court.
