A New Chapter at Belmont Park: A Cinematic Glimpse of the Grand Reopening
The everyday life at Belmont Park continued as usual, with horses adhering to their established routines of waking, feeding, exercising, and receiving care from their handlers. This familiar rhythm persisted over the past three years, even as a striking new structure emerged in their surroundings.
A short distance from the tranquil stable area, the previous grandstand, originally constructed in 1968, was dismantled and replaced by a more compact, contemporary building. This project, costing $450 million in state taxpayer funds, houses the New York Racing Association's new headquarters. Currently, about half of the construction is finished, enough to host approximately 4,000 VIP guests for the grand reopening festivities. Senior writer Ron Flatter of Horse Racing Nation, drawing on his background in traditional media, recorded footage throughout the day at Belmont Park. Inspired by the 1939 film “The City,” Flatter created a six-minute short entitled “New Day at Belmont Park.” The film gracefully transitions from the calm of the backside to the heightened activity leading up to Forever Young’s triumph in the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup, before returning to the peaceful stable area as dusk settles. The production, which incorporates licensed music from Storyblocks Audio, features natural track sounds and does not include narration. Support for the film's creation was provided by Pat McKenna and Keith McCalmont of the NYRA communications team.
