Nysos Opts for Pacific Classic Over Whitney Stakes
In a significant update for horse racing enthusiasts, Nysos is set to bypass the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga. Trainer Bob Baffert has confirmed that the acclaimed racehorse will instead compete in the $1 million Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar, scheduled for August 22. This decision, announced on Saturday, centers on meticulous race planning to ensure Nysos is optimally prepared for future engagements, particularly the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Baffert's rationale behind this strategic shift is rooted in providing Nysos with adequate recovery time. The 5-year-old was transported from Kentucky to California on the day of the announcement, facilitating this new schedule. The Pacific Classic's timing allows for a single race before the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 31 at Keeneland, a more favorable arrangement than the Whitney, which would have necessitated two starts in a shorter timeframe. Furthermore, the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Pacific Classic mirrors that of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, offering an ideal preparatory run for the championship event. Nysos has demonstrated a strong affinity for Del Mar, having secured three victories there, including the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, the San Diego Handicap (G2), and the Bob Hope Stakes (G3).
Despite Nysos’s absence, the Whitney Stakes is still expected to attract a formidable field. Noteworthy contenders include Magnitude, an undefeated participant in three races this year, along with the reigning horse of the year, Sovereignty. Other prominent entries feature Stephen Foster runner-up Baeza, Oaklawn Handicap (G2) victor White Abarrio, and Nitrogen, the Eclipse Award-winning 3-year-old filly of 2025. Meanwhile, Baffert plans to send Explora to Saratoga for the $500,000 Test Stakes (G1), a seven-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies that shares the Whitney card.
