Old Friends Appoints New Leadership and Board Members
Old Friends, the distinguished Thoroughbred retirement organization, has recently unveiled a significant restructuring of its leadership team. Robert Fulmer has been appointed as the new chairman, with Kerry Cauthen stepping into the role of vice chair of the board of directors. This strategic move also includes the addition of several prominent figures to the board, reinforcing the organization's commitment to its core mission of providing a dignified life for retired racehorses. These changes are poised to usher in a new era of growth and innovation, further solidifying Old Friends' position as a leader in Thoroughbred aftercare.
The newly instated leadership, alongside the refreshed board, is tasked with upholding and advancing the core values of Old Friends. Their primary objective is to ensure the continued provision of outstanding care for Thoroughbreds who have concluded their racing and breeding careers. This encompasses not only physical well-being but also a focus on promoting responsible aftercare practices across the industry. Furthermore, the organization aims to enhance public education regarding the lifelong needs of horses, emphasizing the importance of care at every stage of their existence.
Robert Fulmer, who joined the board in December 2024, succeeds Cindy Grisolia, a long-serving chair who will continue her valuable contributions as secretary. Grisolia was pivotal in the early establishment of Old Friends, working alongside founder Michael Blowen to create a foundational pillar for Thoroughbred aftercare. Nicholson conveyed profound gratitude for Grisolia's extraordinary service, acknowledging her leadership in setting the standard for safe, comfortable, and responsible retirement for racehorses during her tenure. Fulmer's background, marked by a deep appreciation for the Thoroughbred industry and a personal connection to horses as an owner and expert in historic equine architecture, positions him uniquely to lead the organization. His lifelong passion for Thoroughbreds, cultivated from an early age near Delaware Park, naturally led him to Old Friends.
Echoing Nicholson's sentiments, Fulmer articulated his vision for Old Friends, emphasizing its potential for significant expansion and pioneering advancements. He spoke of a new phase of growth and innovation under the stewardship of CEO John Nicholson and an energized board. Fulmer detailed critical initiatives, including exploring diverse revenue streams, expanding the organization's geographical footprint, and developing novel approaches to share the narrative of racing. His goal is to create mutual benefits for both individuals and the horses served by Old Friends through these endeavors.
Kerry Cauthen, who has been a board member since March 2024, joins Fulmer in the leadership capacity as vice chair. As a third-generation horseman from Walton, Ky., Cauthen brings a wealth of experience. He is the owner and managing partner of Four Star Sales, a prominent Lexington-based company specializing in Thoroughbred consignment and consulting. Cauthen's extensive involvement in the Thoroughbred industry includes previous service on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and various other boards. He expressed particular pride in contributing to Old Friends' mission of providing aftercare for horses who have dedicated so much to the sport, acknowledging the tireless efforts of the staff and volunteers in caring for both celebrated and unsung equine heroes. He foresees continued promising growth and innovation, eager to support the organization's trajectory into the future.
Situated in Georgetown, Ky., Old Friends has emerged as a nationally recognized leader in Thoroughbred aftercare and retirement. The farm offers lifelong sanctuary to retired racehorses while also serving as a unique destination where visitors globally can interact with some of racing's most iconic equine athletes. This dual role of providing sanctuary and fostering public engagement underscores the organization's comprehensive approach to promoting the well-being and appreciation of Thoroughbreds.
