Pacific Classic 2026: An In-depth Look at the Contenders
The eagerly anticipated 2026 Pacific Classic at Del Mar has unveiled its formidable lineup of eleven contenders, each vying for supremacy in the prestigious Grade 1, $1 million race. This event serves as a crucial qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic, promising an electrifying display of equine athleticism and strategic horsemanship. Among the diverse field, Knightsbridge, a formidable 5-year-old, stands out as the morning-line favorite, poised to overcome a wide starting position and extend his recent impressive form.
Knightsbridge, an illustrious five-year-old, enters the Pacific Classic as the 5-2 morning-line favorite. This comes after his dominant victory in the 1 1/8-mile Monmouth Cup (G3) last month, where he triumphed by a remarkable 10 1/4 lengths. Trainer Bill Mott noted the horse's consistent progression, stating, "He's done a little more each time. The last one was a good one, so we'll see." This marks Knightsbridge's inaugural attempt at a distance exceeding nine furlongs and his first race west of the Mississippi, having been flown to California from Saratoga. Jockey Júnior Alvarado, who has ridden Knightsbridge nine times previously, will be reunited with him for this crucial race, starting from the outermost post 11.
Adding an international flavor to the competition is Finger, a 3-year-old Japanese colt, with morning-line odds of 8-1. Finger arrives in California with high hopes from his connections, seeking an international breakthrough. He boasts victories in the 1 1/8-mile Haneda Hai and the 1 1/4-mile Tokyo Derby this spring, placing him on the cusp of the Japan Dirt Triple Crown. His trainer, Hiroyasu Tanaka, expressed confidence in the colt's potential, viewing this challenge as a valuable developmental experience. Keita Tosaki, Finger's regular jockey, will travel from Japan to ride him from post 3. Tanaka has prior experience at Del Mar, having guided Rousham Park to a second-place finish in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Om N Joy, a 4-year-old filly with 20-1 odds, aims to make history by becoming only the second female winner of the Pacific Classic, a feat last achieved eleven years ago by the legendary Beholder. Her recent form includes a narrow second-place finish, losing by only half a length in the 1 1/16-mile Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar just 15 days prior. Before that, she secured a win at 8-1 odds in the 1 1/8-mile Santa Margarita (G2) at Santa Anita. Trainer Aggie Ordóñez is optimistic about her readiness, noting, "I think she’ll come into the race as good as she’s been." Jockey Kent Desormeaux will guide Om N Joy from the rail post.
The field also includes several seasoned campaigners and millionaires. Hit Show (6-1), owned by Qatar-based Wathnan Racing, has accumulated $9,541,683 in earnings. His last outing, a second-place finish in the 1 1/4-mile Suburban (G2) at Saratoga, was hampered by a stumble at the start. Full Serrano (8-1), the 2024 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner, returns after a lengthy layoff due to a quarter crack and a history of foot issues, having not raced since March. Subsanador (12-1), another Wathnan Racing entry, seeks to regain his form after an ankle injury benched him following his 2024 California Crown (G1) victory. Other notable contenders include Forged Steel (5-1) and Navajo Warrior (8-1), both trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Malarchuk (10-1) from Michael McCarthy’s barn, British Isles (12-1) under Richard Baltas, and Original Sin (15-1) from Brendan Walsh’s stable.
This year's Pacific Classic, despite the absence of retired contenders Nysos and Journalism, promises to be a highly competitive event. Trainer Richard Baltas commented on the strength of the field, stating, "It looks like we have a lot of horses shipping in for the race, so it’s not an easy race." The race is scheduled as the 10th of 11 races on Saturday, with an approximate post time of 9:30 p.m. EDT, and will be broadcast on FS1 and FanDuel TV. Each horse brings a unique narrative, from emerging stars to battle-tested veterans, setting the stage for a memorable contest at Del Mar.
