Renowned Racehorse Baeza Concludes Racing Career, Joins Spendthrift Farm as Stud

The illustrious racing career of Grade 1 winner Baeza has drawn to a close, marking his transition to a new chapter as a stud at Spendthrift Farm. This esteemed equine athlete amassed an impressive record, accumulating more than $2.3 million in prize money and consistently achieving top-three finishes across 13 starts. His notable achievements include a decisive victory in the Pennsylvania Derby (Grade 1) and multiple Grade 1 placings, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor on the track.

Baeza, campaigned by Lee and Susan Searing's C R K Stable alongside his breeder Robert Clay's Grandview Equine, demonstrated exceptional talent throughout his career. At the age of three, he showcased his prowess by securing a second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1), followed by commendable placings in both the prestigious Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. He then capped off his three-year-old season with a commanding performance in the Pennsylvania Derby, where he earned a remarkable 105 Beyer Speed Figure, indicating a superior level of performance.

His success continued into his four-year-old campaign, adding further Grade 1 placings in significant races such as the Stephen Foster, where he recorded an outstanding 112 Beyer, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Lee Searing reflected on Baeza's impact, stating that his run in the Kentucky Derby was an unforgettable moment, highlighting the thrill of watching him compete at the highest level. Searing expressed immense pride in Baeza's track accomplishments and conveyed enthusiasm for supporting his new role in the breeding industry.

Beyond his racing achievements, Baeza possesses an outstanding pedigree, making him a highly sought-after prospect for stud duties. As a $1.2 million Keeneland September yearling, he is the third Grade 1-winning offspring of Puca, who holds the distinction of being a broodmare of the year. Ned Toffey, COO and General Manager of Spendthrift, lauded Baeza as a rare combination of talent, distinguished lineage, and impressive physical attributes, expressing confidence that breeders would be captivated by him.

Baeza retired in sound health and is scheduled to commence his stud career at Spendthrift Farm in 2027, with a stud fee set at $25,000 S&N. He will be available for inspection by breeders in the forthcoming weeks, offering an exciting opportunity for the industry to benefit from his exceptional genetics and proven track record.
