Richard Heysek Elected President of Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association

Richard Heysek, a prominent figure in the thoroughbred breeding and racing community through his Caperlane Farm, has been named the new president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association (FTBOA). His election, which took place during a board meeting subsequent to the annual member assembly, marks a significant moment for the organization. Heysek, alongside his wife Cathy, has a rich history with horses, starting from their studies at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales to their current success as breeders of top-tier thoroughbreds. This transition in leadership is anticipated to usher in a renewed focus on enhancing the standing of Florida's thoroughbred industry.

The FTBOA's annual gathering saw not only the election of Richard Heysek as president but also the appointment of other key executive committee members for the 2026-2027 term. George Isaacs, a former FTBOA president and the general manager of Bridlewood Farm, was chosen as the first vice president. Brent Fernung, another past president with over 45 years of experience in the Florida thoroughbred breeding sector, assumed the role of second vice president. Dr. Tiffany Atteberry, a veterinarian and thoroughbred breeder/owner, was appointed treasurer, while Mary Lightner, a licensed thoroughbred trainer and owner of Shooting Star Thoroughbreds, became the secretary. Additionally, George Russell of Rustlewood Farm and Marilyn Campbell of Stonehedge Farm South were welcomed as new directors to the board.

The journey of Richard and Cathy Heysek in the equestrian world is one of dedication and passion. Their involvement began early, rooted in a lifelong connection with horses, which naturally evolved into thoroughbred breeding and ownership. A pivotal moment occurred in 2013 when they acquired their first thoroughbred, a filly named Congarette, for $7,000. This investment soon bore fruit, leading to their initial maiden special weight and allowance victories at Belmont Park in 2016, setting the stage for their future successes in the competitive racing domain.

Demonstrating a keen eye for potential, the Heyseks made another strategic acquisition in 2018 at the Keeneland November sale, purchasing Sophia Mia for a modest $4,000. This mare proved to be an exceptional find, later producing Speed Boat Beach, who was crowned Florida-bred Horse of the Year and won the Grade 1 Malibu in 2023. Sophia Mia herself was recognized as the 2023 Florida Broodmare of the Year, highlighting the Heyseks' ability to identify and nurture talent. Their small but impactful broodmare band now numbers two, and their success was further acknowledged with the 2023 Needles Award for outstanding small breeder, celebrating their impressive Florida-bred earnings and race statistics.

The Heyseks are also staunch advocates for thoroughbred aftercare initiatives, emphasizing the collective responsibility within the racing community to support programs that ensure the well-being of retired racehorses. Their commitment extends beyond breeding and racing, underscoring a holistic approach to the sport. As the newly elected president, Richard Heysek's leadership is expected to bring this comprehensive perspective to the FTBOA, fostering an environment where both the sport and its equine athletes thrive.

The election of Richard Heysek to lead the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association signifies a fresh chapter for the organization. His vision, coupled with the diverse expertise of the newly appointed executive committee and board members, is poised to invigorate Florida’s thoroughbred breeding and racing landscape. The Heyseks' personal success story, marked by strategic acquisitions and a deep commitment to the sport, provides a strong foundation for their leadership roles. Their dedication to thoroughbred aftercare further illustrates a well-rounded approach that could greatly benefit the industry as a whole.
