This disciplinary action follows his seventh crop violation in the past 180 days, a finding that has sparked a request for a stay pending an appeal. The suspension encompasses the concluding six days of the Ellis Park racing calendar and the opening day of the Kentucky Downs meet. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) mandates that jockeys limit crop usage to six times per race, with exceptions only for critical safety incidents. Arrieta's most recent infraction occurred on July 25, when stewards observed him using the crop eight times while riding Classic Glide. This incident took place during an allowance race over 1 1/8 miles on the Ellis Park turf, where Classic Glide secured a second-place finish, trailing Totally Justified by three-quarters of a length and leading Sneakily by a neck.
HISA's rule 2283 outlines a penalty escalation system for repeated crop violations within 180 days. For races with a purse between $50,001 and $200,000, exceeding the crop limit by one to three strikes incurs a $500 fine and a one-day suspension. Given Arrieta's accumulation of seven such violations, the total penalty amounts to $3,500 and a seven-day ban. Since HISA began recording these infractions in 2022, Arrieta has amassed 28 crop violations, including seven this year alone across events at Oaklawn, Churchill Downs, and Ellis Park between February 6 and July 19.
